The four most significant modern equivalents are:

  1. The people who read lessons, prayers etc. in a number of traditions and denominations without being part of an authorised minor-order or office.

  2. The lectors of the Orthodox tradition who are still ordained to a minor-order in preparation for ministry in a higher order such as the sub-diaconate.

  3. The Roman Catholic readers who were ordained to a minor-order prior to 1992 and who have been admitted to an office since the reforms of 1992.

  4. The Anglican readers who operate within the Church of England on a voluntary, part time basis as "lay ministers authorised by Canon with a preaching, teaching and liturgical ministry in a pastoral context".
