The four most significant modern equivalents are:
-
The people who read lessons, prayers etc. in a number of
traditions and denominations without being part of an authorised minor-order
or office.
-
The lectors of the Orthodox tradition who are still ordained
to a minor-order in preparation for ministry in a higher order such as the
sub-diaconate.
-
The Roman Catholic readers who were ordained to a
minor-order prior to 1992 and who have been admitted to an office since the
reforms of 1992.
-
The Anglican readers who operate within the Church of
England on a voluntary, part time basis as "lay ministers authorised by
Canon with a preaching, teaching and liturgical ministry in a pastoral
context".
