5.3 The Reader's role at the Eucharist.

Assisting at the Eucharist is the most frequent activity carried out by Readers in the Winchester statistics. However the duty provides an example of the distinction between the frequency of an activity and the importance of the function itself because the survey indicated that assisting with the distribution of bread and wine was considered to be a secondary function by over 50% of respondents.

The e-mail discussion revealed a great deal of controversy and confusion over the involvement of Readers in the 'Ministry of the Word' at the Eucharist because some of the correspondents believed that Readers should only conduct 'The Ministry of the Word' in case of need whilst others argued that Readers should take the whole service apart from the prayer of consecration or that they should adopt the role of the deacon. This suggests that a large number of correspondents saw the 'Ministry of the Word' as part of the Reader's role in conducting or assisting in conducting worship.
