4.13 Title. This need for a new title for Readers was confirmed by 69% of Readers and clergy in the survey and by the divergence discovered in the literature survey between the list of duties completed by the Church of England Reader and the limited function of their counterparts in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. However it should be remembered that the existing title of the "Reader" has survived for two millenniums and has a contemporary meaning within the Church of England which is clearly explained in the Canons and regulations. The survey also showed that whilst there is clear support for a title change, there is no obvious candidate for the alternative title. It is also clear from the e-mail discussion that some of the correspondents were unhappy with the attempt to examine this issue because the CRC has spent hours discussing the issue but failed to come to any agreement and have decided not to raise the subject again for at least five years. A possible resolution to the problem of deciding on an appropriate new title for Readers is the passing of time because the younger Readers and the growing female population who support a change will have an increasing influence within the movement. |
