Whilst the Readers make up almost forty percent of the available headcount, the effective full time equivalent human resource must be significantly lower because of the voluntary, part time nature of the role and the demands of the Readers' other commitments which can include a full time job.

Reader ministry in the Church of England is governed by Canons E4, E5 & E6 of The Canons Of The Church Of England

The work of Readers is overseen by the Central Readers' Council (CRC) which was preceded by the Central Readers' Conference (CRC) and the Central Readers' Board (CRB).
